EAS Peer-Reviewed Research

In 2016 I conducted a comprehensive literature review of existing equine-assisted services (EAS) research as a part of my own research for the The Clinical Practice of Equine-Assisted Therapy. Since that time I have updated the review a number of times, most recently to include all research up to 2018. I am always looking for new research to add as long it as it meets the criteria so don’t be shy to reach out and send along papers for me to add!!!

The inclusion criteria for this list is as follows:

Inclusion Criteria

  • Peer-reviewed (refereed) papers
  • Primary source
  • Written in English
  • Published between 1985-2018
  • Directly relevant to equine-assisted therapy, but includes papers on the following related topics:
    • Robo (or mechanical horse simulator use as it relates to equine-assisted interventions
    • Practice patterns, reviews, and perspectives related to equine-assisted interventions.
    • Horse and welfare, ethics, and selection criteria related to equine-assisted interventions
    • Horse ethology (including communication, behavior, psychology)
    • Safety and accident data related to working with horses

I used the following databases to locate papers:

  • Academic OneFile (Gale Cengage Learning)

  • Academic Search (EBSCO)

  • Cab Abstracts

  • Educational Research Complete (EBSCO)
  • Google Scholar
  • HealthSource (EBSCO)

  • Nursing & Allied Health Collection (Gale Cengage Learning)

  • Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Collection (Gale Cengage Learning)

  • Psychiatric Online

  • PsycInfo & PsycArticles

  • Psychological and Behavioral Sciences Collection (Gale Cengage Learning)

  • PubMed

  • The Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) – (ISI) Web of Science (Thomson Reuters)

  • SPORTDiscus (EBSCO)

  • VetMed (CAB)

Over 350 papers were identified that met the inclusion criteria. These articles were coded and sorted into categories by population or condition addressed by an equine intervention, or by the topic of research inquiry.

Service Acronyms indicate the type of service used in the intervention. If the acronym MH, OT, PT, or ST is used it means I have identified that a licensed health care professional provided the service and identified their professional designation. Here are the acronyms:

AR = Adaptive Riding, C = Executive, corporate, or life coaching, E= Education, Social Emotional Learning, Life Skills, HMS = Horsemanship, MH = Mental Health , N= Nursing, OT = Occupational Therapy, PT = Physical Therapy, S= Simulator (mechanical horse), ST= Speech Therapy, ? = Unsure
